Wembley Tower

Wembley Tower under construction

MacLaren, William Dunn and engineer AD Stewart were awarded the first premium of five hundred guineas in an international competition to submit a design for a tower to exceed the height of the Eiffel Tower, to be built as an attraction in Wembley Park north of London. Their design was for a 358-metre high 8-legged tower. The first viewing platform was completed in 1895 but the tower was never completed. The location was too far from London and the construction company went into liquidation. It remained open to the public until 1902 but was dismantled in 1907.
