Built in 1889, the Policeman's Cottage block of two cottages in Fortingall showed the influence of the traditional thatched cottages of the south west of England. MacLaren designed the cottages as an L-shaped block with a tower on the outside of the L-plan, a contrast to the traditional Scottish L-plan where the tower is typically in the re-entrant angle.
